Château Calon-Ségur 2003 in magnum is a striking Saint-Estèphe classic from one of the Médoc’s most historic estates, celebrated for its depth, structure, and unmistakable personality. The 2003 vintage brought exceptional ripeness to this northern Bordeaux property, resulting in a wine of great concentration, dark-fruit intensity, and impressive longevity. Makuprofiili
The wine shows a deep black-purple colour, especially in magnum, where aging tends to proceed more gracefully and slowly. On the nose, it offers layered aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, licorice, and earthy undergrowth, with a touch of smoke and cedar developing as it opens. On the palate, the wine is rich and powerful yet remarkably composed, with ripe black fruit, supple texture, and a strong tannic core that remains well integrated. The finish is long and persistent, with a sense of freshness despite the warmth of the vintage. This is a wine with excellent aging potential and, in magnum, even greater capacity for further development over time.

Calon-Ségur comes from a distinctive terroir in the far north of Saint-Estèphe, where deep gravel soils rest over clay, creating a rare balance of power and finesse. The estate is traditionally harvested with great care, often among the later picks in the Médoc due to its northern exposure, allowing optimal phenolic ripeness. Winemaking here emphasizes patience and gentle handling, with an aim to preserve the purity of fruit and the natural structure of the wine; Eric Boissenot has long been a consulting influence at the château.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This wine is an excellent match for rich dishes such as roasted lamb, beef Wellington, game, braised short ribs, or duck confit. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses and mushroom-based dishes. Serve at around 16-18°C, and decant for several hours if drinking young; older bottles should be decanted more carefully to preserve their delicate evolution.

It was once owned by the Marquis de Ségur, who also held Lafite and Latour, and his famous remark that his heart belonged to Calon inspired the estate’s enduring heart emblem. Today, Calon-Ségur is widely respected for producing wines of first-growth stature within the Médoc, and the 2012 acquisition by Suravenir Insurance and the Moueix family further strengthened its profile and ambitions.
