Château Mouton Rothschild 1986 is one of Bordeaux’s great collector wines: powerful, impeccably structured, and built for the long haul. From the legendary Pauillac estate that was finally elevated to Premier Cru Classé in 1973, this is a wine that combines grandeur, precision, and unmistakable aristocratic presence.

In the glass, the 1986 typically shows a deep, opaque garnet core with only the first signs of maturity at the rim. The nose is classic top-tier Pauillac: graphite, cedar, blackcurrant, cassis, tobacco leaf, pencil shavings, and a subtle mineral edge, all wrapped in a fine layer of dried herbs and sweet spice.
On the palate, it is dense and structured, with firm tannins, remarkable concentration, and a long, resonant finish. The fruit profile leans toward blackcurrant, plum, and dark cherry, supported by earthy, savory nuances and a strong backbone of acidity. This is a vintage with enormous aging potential; while already showing complexity, it has the structure to continue evolving gracefully for decades under ideal cellar conditions.
Viininvalmistus
Château Mouton Rothschild sits on the gravelly rises of the Plateau de Mouton in Pauillac, where deep gravel soils over sand and clay provide ideal drainage and help regulate vine vigor. The estate’s vineyards are planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, with supporting proportions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, and the vines are managed with meticulous attention from pruning through harvest. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then vinified with great precision before aging in new oak barrels, a method that adds polish, complexity, and remarkable longevity to the wine.
Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a wine that calls for equally refined food: roast lamb, beef Wellington, venison, duck breast, truffle-infused dishes, or mature hard cheeses all make excellent partners. Serve at around 16-18°C, and if the bottle is showing restraint or has significant age, decant carefully for 1-2 hours to separate sediment and allow the wine to open slowly.

Founded in Pauillac in 1853 when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired the estate, Château Mouton Rothschild was transformed under Baron Philippe de Rothschild into one of the world’s most iconic wine estates. His innovations included estate bottling, a dramatic cellar build, and the famous tradition of commissioning artists to design the label each vintage. In 1973, the château was promoted from Second Growth to Premier Cru Classé, a long-awaited recognition of its status and quality, and today it remains one of the most celebrated names in Bordeaux.
