Château Mouton Rothschild 2003 - Imperial

Château Mouton Rothschild 2003 in imperial format is a striking example of one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates at a generous, sun-kissed vintage. Powerful, opulent and deeply expressive, it combines the grandeur of Pauillac with the collector appeal of a legendary first-growth wine, making it a remarkable bottle for both immediate enjoyment and long-term cellaring.

In the glass, the wine shows a dark, concentrated ruby-garnet colour that hints at its depth and maturity. The nose is expansive and layered, with ripe black fruit, toffee, toasted nuances, torrefaction, dark spice and a distinctly exotic, almost heady richness. On the palate, the 2003 vintage is broad, sumptuous and densely textured, with impressive balance behind its abundant ripeness. The tannins are firm but polished, carrying flavours of cassis, plum, sweet spice and subtle smoky oak into a long, satisfying finish. While already highly enjoyable, the wine still has the structure to evolve gracefully for years as the tannins continue to soften and the secondary notes become more pronounced.

Viininvalmistus
Château Mouton Rothschild’s vineyards lie on the deep gravel slopes of Pauillac in the Médoc, where the poor, well-drained soils and proximity to the Gironde help moderate temperature extremes and encourage slow, even ripening. The estate is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot; the 2003 blend reflects the character of the vintage, with fruit harvested in a relatively compact window between mid-September and late September. As with the estate’s top wines, production is handled with meticulous care from vineyard to cellar, and the final blend is selected to preserve Mouton’s hallmark concentration, finesse and ageing capacity.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a wine that shines alongside refined, flavourful dishes such as grilled ribeye, roast lamb, beef Wellington or venison with dark berry sauce. Hard aged cheeses and truffle-inflected dishes are also excellent matches. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting is recommended if opening now, ideally for a few hours, to help the wine fully open and soften in the glass.
