The 2014 is noted for blackberry, cedar, and graphite, with impressive depth and freshness; the 2015 is more perfumed and generous, showing chocolate-covered cherries, red currants, mulberries, and spice, wrapped in fine but firm tannins; and the 2016 is layered and seductive, with warm red and black currants, black plum, truffle, tapenade, rose hip tea, sandalwood, and a mineral, spice-driven finish. Château Pichon-Longueville Baron lies in Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravelly soils and a maritime climate create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon-led blends. The estate is known for meticulous vineyard management, with work adapted to each vintage’s weather conditions, and all fruit is harvested by hand with strict parcel-by-parcel selection based on variety, vine age, and plot. Vinification is carried out with careful maceration and fermentation to extract color, tannin, and aromatics, followed by malolactic fermentation and barrel aging in the château’s cellars. The final blend is assembled after tasting more than 40 individual lots to achieve the precision and complexity that define the Grand Vin.

Serve these wines with classic Bordeaux-friendly dishes such as roast lamb, beef Wellington, entrecôte, game, or duck breast, as well as truffle dishes and mature hard cheeses. A serving temperature of 16–18°C is ideal. Decant young bottles, especially the 2015 and 2016, for one to two hours to allow the aromatics and structure to open fully; older bottles should be decanted more gently, mainly to remove sediment.

Founded in 1689, Château Pichon-Longueville Baron became one of Bordeaux’s great names before the estate was divided in 1850 following the death of Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville. In the 1855 Classification, it was ranked a Second Growth, and since being acquired by AXA in the 1980s, the château has undergone significant investment and modernization under Jean-Michel Cazes and later stewardship. Today, Pichon-Baron is widely regarded as a “super second,” producing wines of exceptional depth, precision, and consistency that are often compared with Bordeaux’s top estates.
