Château Pontet-Canet is one of Pauillac’s most compelling estates, offering a rare glimpse into a benchmark Bordeaux house that has evolved dramatically over time. This six-vintage set from 1990, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, and 1999 captures the transition from a traditional classified growth to a property that would soon become a leader in organic and biodynamic viticulture. Situated just across from Mouton-Rothschild, the château has long been associated with serious Cabernet-driven wines of depth, structure, and ageing potential.

Makuprofiili
These wines typically show a deep ruby to opaque purple core, especially in the more powerful vintages such as 1990, 1994, 1995, and 1996. Aromatically, expect classic Pauillac notes of cassis, blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, graphite, earth, and spice, with more developed bottles adding dried herbs, incense, and secondary savory nuances. On the palate, Pontet-Canet is known for concentration, firm tannins, and impressive length, with the best years combining richness and precision in a very classic Bordeaux frame. The 1996 and 1994 are especially built for longevity, while 1995 offers a riper, more generous profile. The 1998 is more elegant and lighter in structure, and the 1999 is generally at a more open, mature stage. The top vintages in this set have the capacity to age gracefully for many years, though some are already drinking beautifully now.

Château Pontet-Canet is located in Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravelly soils and the moderating influence of the Gironde create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate’s vineyards are planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, and the wines are traditionally harvested and vinified to preserve ripeness, freshness, and structure. Under Alfred Tesseron and Jean-Michel Comme, the estate moved steadily toward organic and then biodynamic farming, becoming the first 1855 Classified Growth to be both certified organic and biodynamic in 2005.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
These wines are an excellent match for roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting older bottles gently for about 30–60 minutes, while younger, more structured vintages may benefit from longer aeration to help the tannins soften and the aromatics unfold.

Château Pontet-Canet has roots stretching back to the early 18th century, when Jean-François Pontet and later Pierre-Bernard de Pontet established the estate. After a turbulent period under the Cruse family, the property was purchased by Guy Tesseron in 1975, and quality-focused changes accelerated under Jean-Michel Comme and later Alfred Tesseron. Today, Pontet-Canet is widely respected as one of Bordeaux’s most innovative and sustainable estates, admired both for its environmental leadership and for producing wines of real class and longevity.
