Guigal La Turque 1999

E. Guigal’s La Turque is one of the most celebrated and collectible wines from Côte-Rôtie, and the 1999 vintage comes from an outstanding year in the Northern Rhône. Often regarded as the most exotic of Guigal’s legendary “La La” wines, it combines power, depth, and remarkable finesse, with fruit from the steep, south-facing slopes of Côte Brune that give the wine its signature intensity and complexity.

In the glass, the 1999 La Turque still shows impressive vitality and depth of colour. The nose is richly layered with dark berries, blackcurrant, and cherry, lifted by notes of violet, smoke, coffee, and truffle. The palate is dense yet silky, with ripe tannins, vivid acidity, and a core of dark fruit framed by spice, mineral tones, and a subtle wild, animal complexity that is characteristic of great Côte-Rôtie. The finish is exceptionally long and persistent, suggesting that this is a wine with outstanding ageing potential, even at this mature stage.

Viininvalmistus
La Turque is sourced from steep, terraced parcels in Côte Brune, where schist soils contribute power, structure, and impressive aromatic complexity. The vineyards are hand-harvested due to the extreme slope, and the grapes are vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks before being aged in new oak barrels for up to 42 months, with only the most concentrated and balanced barrels selected for the final cuvée. The wine is made primarily from Syrah with a small addition of Viognier, following the traditional Côte-Rôtie style.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a wine that pairs beautifully with rich, flavourful dishes such as roast lamb, game, venison, beef fillet, or slow-braised short ribs, as well as truffle-based dishes and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking now to help the wine fully open up and reveal its complexity.
