Henri Bonneau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Célestins 2017 is one of the most coveted wines from the Rhône, celebrated for its depth, rarity, and unmistakable sense of place. First introduced in 1927, this iconic cuvée is built around old-vine Grenache, with small amounts of Mourvèdre, Counoise, and Vaccarèse adding complexity and structure.

In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby to garnet hue, with the kind of concentration that hints at its long élevage and old-vine origins. The nose is layered and expressive, offering ripe black cherries, kirsch, dried herbs, garrigue, spice, leather, and earthy mineral tones, unfolding slowly with air. On the palate, it is richly textured and broad, yet balanced by remarkable freshness and finely integrated tannins. The fruit is dark and generous, framed by savory herbs, peppery spice, and a subtle gamey complexity that develops with time. This is a wine built for the long haul, with outstanding aging potential and the ability to evolve beautifully for decades.

Viininvalmistus
The estate’s vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape cover only about 6 hectares, with very low yields and a strong focus on fully ripe fruit harvested late in the season. The blend is dominated by approximately 90% Grenache, supported by small portions of Mourvèdre, Counoise, and Vaccarèse—what Henri Bonneau referred to as the wine’s “pepper and salt.” Fermentation takes place in cement tanks, followed by extended maturation in a combination of old foudres and ancient oak barrels for 3 to 5 years, and sometimes much longer depending on the vintage. Only the best barrels are selected for Réserve des Célestins.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a natural match for rich, savory dishes such as roasted lamb, game, braised beef, duck confit, or herb-crusted venison. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, mature cheeses, and earthy mushroom preparations. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting is recommended, especially if the wine is young, to allow its aromas and structure to fully open.

Henri Bonneau was a 12th-generation winemaker who began producing wine under his own name in 1956 and went on to become a true legend in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and beyond. Known for his uncompromising approach, extremely low yields, and famously patient élevage, he crafted wines that became among the most sought-after in the world. After his passing in 2016, his son Marcel has continued the family legacy, preserving the reputation of one of the Rhône’s most revered domaines.
