Mills Vineyard Pinot Noir 2010 from Calera is a striking example of what can happen when old-world inspiration meets exceptional California terroir. Planted on Mount Harlan’s limestone-rich soils, the vineyard has the kind of structure and freshness often associated with Burgundy, while Calera’s skilled winemaking gives the wine both intensity and finesse. First planted in 1984, Mills Vineyard has become one of the estate’s most compelling expressions of Pinot Noir.

In the glass, this Pinot Noir shows a deep, elegant ruby tone, hinting at its concentration and maturity. The nose is beautifully layered with dark cherries, strawberries, clove, thyme, sage, and a subtle touch of cocoa, giving it both fruit depth and savory complexity. The palate is expressive and refined, opening with blackcurrant, dark plum, and cloudberry, followed by earthy notes of mushrooms, black pepper, and a faint hint of grilled tomato. It has impressive drive and balance, with the structure and concentration to age gracefully for many years, though it already offers plenty of pleasure today.

Mills Vineyard sits on Mount Harlan, where the high limestone content and cool climate provide ideal conditions for producing serious Pinot Noir. The vineyard was planted in 1984, and the combination of mineral-rich soils and a favorable site helps shape the wine’s freshness, depth, and precision. This vintage was aged for 17 months in French oak barrels, including 30% new oak, to add complexity and structure without overwhelming the fruit.

This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with roasted duck, mushroom risotto, lamb, game birds, or dishes featuring earthy herbs and rich sauces. Serve it slightly cool, around 16–18°C, to allow the aromatic complexity to shine. Decanting is recommended if opening now, as it can help the wine open up and show its full range of fruit, spice, and savory nuance.
