Opus One 2017

Opus One 2017 is one of Napa Valley’s most iconic Bordeaux-style blends, created from the partnership between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. Though Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, the wine’s supporting cast of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec adds depth, perfume and complexity, making it a benchmark for California fine wine. The 2017 vintage is especially notable for its balance, grace and precision in a year marked by extreme conditions in Napa Valley.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, it shows a medium to deep garnet-purple color. The nose opens gradually, offering layered aromas of baked black cherries, mulberries, black raspberries and cassis, followed by notes of blackberry pie, spice cake, tapenade, licorice, dusty soil and a hint of wild sage. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with vivid, juicy fruit and a fresh, energetic line that keeps everything focused and elegant. The tannins are ripe and plush, supporting a long, graceful finish. While already highly impressive, this is a wine with excellent aging potential and will continue to evolve beautifully over time.

Viininvalmistus
The fruit comes from four unique parcels in the Oakville district of Napa Valley, an area widely regarded as especially well suited to Bordeaux varieties. In 2017, Opus One harvested 91% of its fruit before the California fires began, helping preserve the integrity of the vintage. The grapes were hand-harvested and rigorously sorted both in the vineyard and again in the cellar after de-stemming. Fermentation included 18 days of skin contact, followed by 18 months of maturation in new French oak barrels and a final egg-white fining before bottling.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a wine that shines alongside richly flavored dishes such as prime rib, grilled ribeye, lamb rack, venison, or truffle-infused mushroom dishes. It also pairs beautifully with hard aged cheeses like Comté or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at around 16-18°C, and decant for at least 1-2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromas and structure to open fully.
