Calera’s Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard 2016 is a standout expression of California Pinot Noir, shaped by the limestone-rich slopes of Mount Harlan. Planted in 1984 and crafted from one of the estate’s most distinctive sites, this is a wine that balances intensity with elegance, showing the kind of structure and complexity that invite comparisons to top Burgundian terroirs. After 17 months in French oak, including 30% new barrels, it offers both polish and depth, with the promise of impressive aging.

In the glass, this Pinot Noir shows a deep, refined ruby color that hints at its concentration. The nose is layered and aromatic, with dark cherries, strawberry, clove, thyme, sage, and a touch of cocoa, giving it both warmth and freshness. On the palate, it unfolds with blackcurrant, dark plum, and cloudberry, followed by earthy notes of mushroom, black pepper, and a subtle hint of grilled tomato. The wine is intense yet poised, with fine structure and a long, savory finish. While already showing plenty of character, it is clearly built for the cellar and should continue to evolve beautifully over time.

Mills Vineyard sits on Mount Harlan in California, where the high limestone content and cool climate create ideal conditions for Pinot Noir of real finesse and depth. The vineyard was planted in 1984, and the site’s rocky, calcareous soils help produce naturally concentrated fruit with strong acidity and mineral tension. The grapes are vinified by winemaker Mike Waller and aged for 17 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new, adding spice, texture, and complexity without overpowering the wine’s site-driven character.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a versatile but serious Pinot Noir that pairs beautifully with duck breast, roast chicken, mushroom risotto, pork tenderloin, or game birds. It also works well with earthy vegetarian dishes featuring root vegetables, truffle, or wild mushrooms. Serve at 16–18°C, and decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended if opening young, though it can also be enjoyed straight from the bottle for a more delicate expression.
