Ridge Vineyards Lytton Springs 2017 300CL

Ridge Vineyards’ Lytton Springs is one of California’s great field-blend reds, built to show the depth and personality of old-vine Zinfandel rather than force it into a single-varietal mold. First made in 1972, it has become a benchmark for the style, with the 2017 vintage blending Zinfandel with Petite Sirah, Carignan, and Mourvèdre to add structure, spice, and complexity.

In the glass, Lytton Springs 2017 shows a deep, dark ruby color that hints at its concentration. The nose is layered and inviting, with ripe blackberry, plum, dried herbs, black pepper, and savory notes from the supporting varietals. The palate is rich and expressive, balancing Zinfandel’s juicy fruit with the firm grip of Petite Sirah and the earthy, spice-driven character of Carignan and Mourvèdre. It feels concentrated yet harmonious, with good freshness and a long, detailed finish. This is a wine with excellent aging potential and should continue to evolve beautifully over the coming years.

Lytton Springs comes from one of Ridge’s most important California sites, where the goal is to capture the complexity of the vineyard through a carefully adjusted field blend each vintage. The final composition changes according to the growing season, allowing the winemaking team to emphasize balance and quality rather than a fixed formula. For 2017, the blend was 74% Zinfandel, 15% Petite Sirah, 9% Carignan, and 2% Mourvèdre, reflecting Ridge’s precise approach to vinification and its long experience with old-vine blending.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is an excellent match for grilled lamb, braised short ribs, barbecued meats, rosemary-seasoned dishes, or mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to soften the tannins and open up the wine’s aromatic layers.
