Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select 2002 Magnum

Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select 2002 Magnum is one of Napa Valley’s true benchmark Cabernets, a wine that belongs on any serious collector’s shortlist. Made entirely from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grown on Shafer’s hillside parcels in the Stags Leap District, it combines immense power with remarkable precision, and the 2002 vintage famously earned a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker.

In the glass, it shows deep, concentrated color and an imposing presence that hints at its depth and structure. The nose opens with intense cassis, ripe dark berries, spring flowers, toasty new oak, and a subtle earthiness that adds complexity and lift. On the palate, this is a monumental Cabernet with layers of rich blackcurrant fruit, polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and beautifully integrated oak. Despite its size and intensity, the wine remains exceptionally balanced and refined, with the kind of purity and finesse that Stags Leap District is known for. It is ready to impress now in large-format glory, yet has the structure and pedigree to continue evolving for decades—Parker suggested as long as 30 years.

Viininvalmistus
Hillside Select comes from 14 small hillside parcels surrounding Shafer’s winery, where the steep slopes and well-drained soils help produce fruit with concentration, freshness, and fine tannic structure. The grapes are harvested from selected hillside sites and vinified to preserve the intensity and natural balance of the fruit. The wine then spends 32 months aging in 100% new French oak barrels, adding depth, spice, and a seamless layer of toast to the final blend.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
Best enjoyed with richly flavored dishes such as grilled ribeye, dry-aged beef, lamb chops, or braised short ribs, as well as hard aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting is strongly recommended—especially for current enjoyment—to allow the wine to fully open and show its layered aromatics and polished structure.
