Smith & Sheth CRU Chardonnay Heretaunga 2020 is a refined, site-driven New Zealand Chardonnay that brings together fruit from Omahu Vineyard and Howell Vineyard in Hawke’s Bay’s Heretaunga Plains. Crafted by celebrated winemaker Steve Smith, it combines sustainable viticulture, hand harvesting, and meticulous oak work to deliver a wine of real precision, depth, and class. It also reflects the modern evolution of premium New Zealand Chardonnay, where careful vineyard selection and thoughtful winemaking take centre stage.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, it shows a beautiful straw-yellow hue, setting the stage for a wine that feels both fresh and generously textured. The nose opens with white peach, apple and grapefruit, layered with toasted cashew, brioche and a gentle touch of vanilla. On the palate, this Chardonnay is silky and focused, with impressive concentration and plenty of nuance. The oak is well integrated, adding subtle richness without overpowering the fruit, while the finish is long and distinctly mineral. It has excellent balance and should continue to drink beautifully for at least the next 5 years.

Viininvalmistus
Fruit for this wine comes from two sustainably farmed vineyards in the Heretaunga area, each planted with three Chardonnay clones and managed with a strong focus on quality and environmental stewardship. The grapes were harvested by hand, then whole bunches were pressed to preserve delicacy and purity. Fermentation took place in a mix of new and used French oak barrels, followed by 11 months of maturation in oak to build texture and complexity.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This Chardonnay pairs especially well with roast chicken, grilled lobster, seared scallops, creamy pasta dishes, or rich fish such as salmon and turbot. Serve chilled at around 10-12°C to best highlight its freshness and layered texture. Decanting is not essential, though a brief time in the glass or a splash decant can help open up the wine if enjoyed young.
