Walter Hansel Pinot Noir The South Slope 2021

Walter Hansel’s The South Slope 2021 is a distinctive Russian River Valley Pinot Noir from the winery’s southernmost and highest-elevation vineyard site. Made entirely from Dijon clone 777 on 18-year-old vines, it offers a concentrated yet refined expression of California Pinot Noir with a nod to the elegance of Premier Cru Côte de Beaune, while showing increasing New World character in each vintage.

Makuprofiili
Deep ruby in the glass, this Pinot Noir immediately signals depth and intensity. The bouquet is layered and expressive, with dark berries, raspberry, basil, roses, damp earth, forest floor, spice, leather, smoke, and tobacco. On the palate, it unfolds with dark cherry, wild blueberry, strawberry, plum, cola, and wildflowers, all carried by silky tannins and excellent balance. The wine is approachable now, but it has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for decades.

The South Slope vineyard sits in the Russian River Valley as Walter Hansel’s most southerly and highest-planted site, giving the fruit a cooler, elevated growing environment with strong site character. In 2021, the vineyard delivered the highest yield among the estate’s Pinot Noir parcels, though production remained deliberately low. The wine is made solely from Dijon clone 777, sourced from mature 18-year-old vines, with the emphasis clearly on precision, concentration, and vineyard expression.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with roast duck, grilled salmon, mushroom risotto, truffle dishes, herb-crusted lamb, and earthy poultry preparations. Serve at 14–16°C for the best expression of its aromatics and texture. Decanting is optional, but a short decant of 20–30 minutes can help open the wine in its youth.
