Weingut Friedrich Becker’s ‘Herrenwingert’ Spätburgunder Premier Cru 2017 is a striking example of how refined German Pinot Noir can be. Sitting just below Becker’s two legendary top vineyards, Sankt Paul and Kammerberg, this cuvée is nevertheless a serious wine in its own right—one that many producers in the Pfalz would gladly call their flagship.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, the wine shows a bright, light cherry-red colour that hints at its elegance. The nose is expressive and layered, offering strawberries, cherries, raspberries, tobacco, earth, and a subtle touch of mint. The palate is full-bodied and rounded, delivering fruit with impressive intensity and warmth, supported by notes of wood and a faint smoky edge. There is excellent length on the finish, and the wine has a clear capacity to develop beautifully with further bottle ageing.

Viininvalmistus
Herrenwingert lies about 4 km east of Schweigen, near the village of Steinfeld, where the vines grow in clay-rich loam over limestone rock. This combination gives Spätburgunder ideal conditions, adding both richness and mineral tension. The grapes are harvested by hand, fermented in large open wooden vats, and then matured for 18 months in a mix of small German and French oak barrels.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is an elegant yet powerful Pinot Noir that pairs beautifully with duck, roast quail, game birds, veal, wild mushroom dishes, and dishes with earthy autumn flavours. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if the wine is young, to help it open fully.
