Taylor's Vintage Port 1970

Taylor’s Vintage Port 1970 is a benchmark bottle from one of the Douro Valley’s most iconic names. Produced by a house celebrated for power, longevity, and structure, this vintage reflects the classic Taylor’s style: dense, serious, and built for long maturation. Robert Parker famously compared Taylor’s to the Latour of Portugal, and the 1970 is a clear example of why.

In the glass, this Vintage Port is typically deep and intense in colour, showing the dark, brooding concentration expected from a great vintage year. The nose is layered and evolving, with aromas that can include black fruits, dried fig, spice, cocoa, and earthy notes, all wrapped in a firm, reserved profile that opens slowly over time. On the palate, it is powerful and structured, with impressive depth, ripe fruit concentration, and the hallmark backbone that makes Taylor’s so age-worthy. Even after decades, the wine often retains a sense of firmness and inner tension, with a long, persistent finish. It has outstanding ageing potential, and mature bottles can continue to evolve gracefully for many years under proper cellaring.

Taylor’s sources its grapes from some of the finest vineyards in the Douro Valley, including its own celebrated estates with group A classifications, the highest level of quality in the region. The steep, rugged terroir of the Douro, combined with varied microclimates across the estates, gives the wines their depth, complexity, and structure. Vintage Ports are traditionally made from carefully harvested grapes, selected for concentration and balance, and vinified to preserve the intensity and natural character of the fruit before long ageing in bottle.

Taylor’s, formally Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman, has been producing fine Port since 1692 and is one of the most respected houses in the Douro. It is widely recognised for its Vintage Ports, as well as exceptional Tawny, LBV, and White Port styles. A pioneer in the Port trade, Taylor’s was among the first to acquire its own vineyards in the Douro, helped shape modern Port production, and notably introduced Late Bottled Vintage Port in 1970. The house remains a reference point for quality and longevity in the region.
