Château Léoville Las Cases 1982 is a benchmark Saint-Julien from one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates, and a wine many collectors regard as a de facto First Growth in quality. Even at four decades of age, the wine can still show a deep ruby-black core, a striking reminder of just how slowly it evolves. The bouquet opens gradually with cassis, dark plum, pencil shavings, loamy earth, and subtle cedar-like nuances, all unfolding with air rather than rushing to reveal itself. On the palate, it is full-bodied and broad-shouldered, with a muscular frame supported by ample, powdery tannins and a richly concentrated core of black fruit. The style is powerful yet refined, with a comparatively low-acid profile that makes the wine feel expansive and layered. This is a bottle built for extended aging, and one that continues to reward patience and aeration.

Léoville Las Cases sits in the northern edge of Saint-Julien, with vineyards bordering Pauillac and the great Château Latour, a location that gives the estate some of the Médoc’s most impressive gravels and a naturally structured, long-lived style. The revered l’Enclos parcels, planted with old vines, are central to the estate’s character and help deliver the depth and intensity for which the wine is known. Harvesting is typically carried out with careful parcel selection to preserve precision and ripeness, followed by a vinification approach aimed at extracting concentration while maintaining finesse and aging potential.

This is a wine that shines alongside rich, savory dishes such as beef Wellington, roast lamb, venison, truffle-infused dishes, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decanting is strongly recommended, especially for a mature bottle, to allow the wine to open fully and reveal its layered complexity.
