R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva 2009 is one of Rioja’s most distinctive white wines, shaped by long ageing and an unmistakably traditional style. Made from Viura and Malvasia and released only after years in barrel and bottle, it offers a rare combination of freshness, complexity, and deep tertiary character. With production strictly limited from the small white-planted parcel at Tondonia, it remains a highly sought-after bottle for lovers of classic Rioja.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, this Reserva Blanco shows a polished, mature profile with the pale golden hue you’d expect from extended ageing. The nose is layered and expressive, with notes of preserved lemon, orange peel, chamomile, wax, and gentle oxidative nuance, all framed by a lively, citrus-driven core. On the palate, it is dry, linear, and medium-bodied, with impressive tension and precision. Bright acidity gives the wine a focused, almost architectural feel, while the long ageing adds depth, savoury complexity, and a lingering finish. Although already very compelling, it still has plenty of aging potential and may develop even greater nuance over the coming years.

Viininvalmistus
The Viña Tondonia white vineyards sit in Rioja’s classic riverbank terroir, where the small planted area for white grapes makes the wine inherently limited in production. The grapes are traditionally harvested and fermented in old 6,000-litre oak casks, after which the wine is aged for six years in American oak barrels, with only a small proportion new, alongside older barrels that lend subtlety rather than overt wood character. It then spends a further seven years in bottle before release, resulting in a wine built on patience, complexity, and remarkable depth.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This wine pairs beautifully with rich seafood dishes, roast poultry, shellfish, mature hard cheeses, and refined dishes with creamy or nutty sauces. Serve it slightly chilled, around 10–12°C, to preserve its precision and aromatic detail. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but a little air can help open up its layered aromas, especially if the bottle is opened young relative to its long potential.
