Avignonesi Desiderio Merlot 2021

Avignonesi Desiderio Merlot 2021 is a refined Tuscan red that combines the generosity of Merlot with the added structure of Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced from two of Avignonesi’s prized areas, Montepulciano and Cortona, it reflects the estate’s biodynamic philosophy and its long-standing dedication to expressive, site-driven wines. The wine’s name pays tribute to a legendary bull from the Capezzine farm, linking this modern cuvée to the agricultural history of the region.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, it shows a deep, inviting ruby color. The nose is generous and layered, with ripe dark fruit, plum, blackberry, and subtle floral tones, followed by hints of spice, cocoa, and well-integrated oak. On the palate, it is plush yet balanced, with Merlot’s soft texture supported by fresh acidity and the firmer backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon. The finish is long and savory, with polished tannins and a concentrated, fruit-driven character that should continue to evolve beautifully with a few years in bottle.

Viininvalmistus
The grapes come from vineyards planted on a mix of river sediment, clay, silt, and clay-rich soils in Cortona and Montepulciano, giving the wine both richness and freshness. Harvest takes place from late August to early September, and the fruit is handled gently from vineyard to cellar to preserve berry integrity and avoid unnecessary вмешательства. Each parcel is fermented and matured separately in stainless steel with native yeasts, followed by malolactic fermentation in wooden vats, and the final blend is aged for 20 months in 225-liter oak barrels.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, grilled beef, braised short ribs, and rich mushroom dishes, as well as aged Pecorino or other hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decanting for about 1 hour is recommended to let the wine open fully and show its depth and complexity.

Avignonesi was founded in 1974 in Montepulciano by the historic family whose name it still bears, and it entered a new chapter in 2009 when Virginie Saverys took over and began a major transformation toward smaller-scale, biodynamic viticulture. Today the estate spans 175 hectares across Montepulciano and Cortona and is widely regarded as one of Italy’s leading biodynamic producers. Its reputation in Tuscany rests on a combination of high-quality vineyard sites, careful winemaking, and a strong commitment to sustainable farming.
