Château d’Yquem 1988 is one of the great reference points for sweet Bordeaux, a wine long celebrated for its remarkable concentration, balance, and longevity. Château d’Yquem is situated on the highest hill in Sauternes, where the gravelly, well-drained soils and unique microclimate encourage the development of noble rot, or botrytis cinerea. The grapes are harvested by hand in multiple selective passes, with only the perfectly botrytised berries chosen for the final wine. The blend is traditionally dominated by Sémillon, supported by Sauvignon Blanc, and yields are extremely low. Vinification is meticulous and patient, with fermentation and aging carried out to preserve both richness and precision, resulting in a wine of exceptional concentration and remarkable balance.

Serve Château d’Yquem 1988 slightly chilled, ideally around 10-12°C, to allow its aromatic complexity to show beautifully without muting the texture. Decanting is not usually necessary, but an older bottle may benefit from a gentle splash decant if sediment is present. It pairs wonderfully with foie gras, blue cheeses such as Roquefort, fruit-based desserts, tarte Tatin, or simply enjoyed on its own as a contemplative wine. Its sweetness and acidity also make it a superb match for dishes with spice, citrus, or caramelized elements.
