Gutzler Morstein Spätburgunder 2021 is a refined Grosses Gewächs that shows just how compelling Pinot Noir can be in the right hands and on the right site. From the limestone-rich Morstein vineyard in Rheinhessen, it combines finesse, clarity, and depth with an unmistakable sense of place, making it one of the region’s standout expressions of Spätburgunder. While Morstein is often celebrated for Riesling, this wine quietly proves it has the structure and terroir to produce Pinot Noir of serious class.
Makuprofiili
In the glass, this Pinot Noir is bright and elegant, with a poised, translucent ruby hue typical of top-quality Spätburgunder. The nose opens with fresh raspberry, cherry, rhubarb, baked beetroot, violets, and gentle spice, all delivered with precision and lift. On the palate, it is intensely fresh and finely textured, with vibrant red fruit carried by a cool, chalky mineral edge that gives the wine both tension and length.
The finish is graceful and persistent, with the fruit seeming to float rather than weigh down the palate. This is a wine built for subtle evolution rather than sheer power, and it should reward cellaring over the next several years as the floral, spicy, and mineral nuances continue to unfold.
Viininvalmistus
Morstein in Rheinhessen is a limestone-dominated site with excellent drainage and a terroir that brings brightness, structure, and mineral precision to Pinot Noir. The grapes for this Grosses Gewächs are carefully selected from this premium vineyard, where the cool-climate conditions and chalky soils help preserve freshness and aromatic detail. Vinification is handled with the precision expected of a top German dry Pinot Noir, with an emphasis on purity, balance, and site expression.
Ruoka & tarjoilu
This wine pairs beautifully with duck breast, roasted quail, veal, mushroom dishes, and game birds, as well as elegant vegetarian plates featuring root vegetables or truffle. Serve at around 14–16°C to preserve its delicacy and aromatic lift. Decanting is optional, but a short decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up and reveal more of its layered perfume.
