Kumeu River Crémant Blanc de Blancs 2018 is a compelling example of how exceptional sparkling wine can come from outside Champagne. Made entirely from Chardonnay by one of New Zealand’s most respected producers, it combines precision, elegance, and a distinctly cool-climate personality that makes it a serious contender in any blind tasting. In the glass, this Blanc de Blancs should show a fine, persistent mousse with a bright, pale straw colour and hints of green-gold. The nose is expected to be refined and expressive, with citrus, green apple, white flowers, and subtle brioche or toasted nut notes, all framed by fresh mineral tension. On the palate, the wine is likely to be crisp and focused, with Chardonnay-driven purity, lively acidity, and a creamy yet restrained texture. This sparkling wine is a natural match for oysters, caviar, shellfish, sushi, sashimi, and delicate seafood dishes, but it will also shine alongside creamy poultry, soft cheeses, or lightly salted snacks. Serve well chilled, ideally around 6–8°C, to preserve its freshness and fine mousse. Decanting is not recommended; instead, open shortly before serving and enjoy while it is at its brightest.
