Opus One 1988

Opus One 1988 is a classic expression of one of California’s most iconic cult wines, created from the partnership between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. Built on a Cabernet Sauvignon-led Bordeaux blend with Cabernet Franc playing an important supporting role, it captures the ambition, polish, and prestige that made Opus One a benchmark in Napa Valley. The 1988 vintage is especially notable for showing remarkable elegance and balance in a year that was not considered especially strong in the region.

In the glass, the wine shows a deep dark ruby color, still impressive in its intensity. The nose is refined and expressive, opening with currants, smoky new oak, and a classic Napa richness that has softened beautifully with age. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, concentrated, and velvety, with gentle tannins, low acidity, and a smooth, polished finish. Viininvalmistus
The fruit for Opus One comes from four distinctive vineyard parcels in the Oakville district of Napa Valley, an area widely regarded as ideal for Bordeaux varieties thanks to its well-drained soils, warm days, and cool evening influence. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted both in the vineyard and again in the cellar after destemming, ensuring only the best fruit is used. Fermentation includes about 18 days of skin contact, followed by 18 months of maturation in new French oak barrels and finishing with traditional egg-white fining before bottling.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
Opus One 1988 pairs beautifully with classic fine-dining dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, braised short ribs, duck breast, or truffle-infused mushroom dishes. It also works well with aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and if opening now, decant gently for around 30–60 minutes to help the wine unfold without losing its mature nuance.
