Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 Magnum

Ridge Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon is one of California’s most celebrated wines and a true benchmark for long-lived Bordeaux-style blends. First released in 1962 from the historic Monte Bello Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains, it combines remarkable elegance, depth, and precision, making it a wine collectors and enthusiasts seek out year after year.

The 2017 Vintage shows a deep dark ruby color and immediately signals seriousness in the glass. The nose is complex and layered, with ripe plum, blackberry, espresso, black truffle, anise, crushed stone, and subtle oak spice from the barrel aging. On the palate, it is powerful and full-bodied, yet composed and beautifully balanced, with dark fruit at the center and savory notes woven through the finish. Despite its concentration, the alcohol stays modest at 13.7%, giving the wine a refined, almost restrained feel. Still youthful and tightly wound, it has excellent aging potential and should develop beautifully over many years.

Monte Bello Vineyard sits in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where the altitude and cooler mountain climate help preserve freshness, structure, and aromatic complexity. The site has a long viticultural history dating back to 1886, though production was interrupted during Prohibition. For this vintage, the wine was crafted as a Bordeaux blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with support from Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and aged for 17 months in 100% new, air-dried oak barrels to build depth and polish.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This wine is an excellent match for richly flavored dishes such as roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, slow-braised short ribs, or wild mushroom dishes. It also pairs well with aged hard cheeses and truffle-based cuisine. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young, as this will help open the wine’s aromatic complexity and soften its structure.
