Sine Qua Non Grenache "Stein" 2012 is a striking expression of Manfred Krankl’s fearless, highly personal approach to winemaking, where creativity and uncompromising quality come first. Built mainly around Grenache with small portions of Syrah and possibly other varieties, it reflects the character of Sine Qua Non’s low-yield Californian vineyards and the cult status the winery has earned through its boundary-pushing wines. The name "Stein"—German for stone—hints at both the wine’s mineral tension and its monumental, serious profile.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, this 2012 vintage shows a deep, dark ruby color that immediately signals intensity. The nose is layered and expressive, offering ripe dark berries, black tea, licorice, toasted spice, violets, and subtle hints of smoked meat and graphite. On the palate, it is rich yet remarkably precise, with waves of dark fruit, herbs, mineral notes, and well-integrated oak carried by silky tannins and vibrant acidity. The overall balance gives the wine lift and definition despite its powerful structure. This is a long-lived Grenache with impressive aging potential, and the 2012 vintage is especially notable for its elegance, depth, and ability to evolve beautifully over time.

Viininvalmistus
The grapes come from Sine Qua Non’s own Californian vineyards, especially Eleven Confessions and Cumulus, where low yields and biodynamic principles help produce fruit with exceptional concentration and intensity. The sites are carefully farmed to capture a distinctive sense of place, with the stony, sun-drenched conditions contributing to the wine’s layered, powerful character. Vinification follows Manfred Krankl’s intuitive, vintage-by-vintage approach, with the final blend adjusted according to the best expression of each year’s fruit.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a wine that pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes such as lamb, braised short ribs, roasted duck, game birds, or grilled meats with herb-forward sauces. It also works well with aged hard cheeses and earthy dishes featuring mushrooms or root vegetables. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours to let the aromas and structure open fully.
