Oak Trail Zinfandel 2021

Oak Trail Zinfandel 2021 is a generously fruited Californian red that delivers plenty of character and value in the glass. Made primarily from Zinfandel with a touch of Petite Sirah, it combines ripe dark fruit, soft spice, and a rounded, approachable style that reflects the sun-drenched tradition of California Zinfandel.

In the glass, the wine shows a ruby-red color with a hint of purple. The nose offers warm aromas of red and dark berries, ripe plum, and spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and supple, with plenty of juicy blackcurrant, mature plum, and sweet, spicy notes that carry through to a long, smooth finish. The wine has a rich, fruit-forward profile with enough structure from oak aging to give it shape and depth. Drink it now for its plush, youthful appeal, though it should hold well over the next few years.

Zinfandel thrives in California’s warm, dry summers and cooler winters, where daytime heat and evening breezes allow for a long ripening season and concentrated flavor development. The vineyards feature well-drained sandy soils and old, gnarled vines ranging from 30 to 100 years in age, contributing intensity and complexity to the fruit. The wine was aged for 10 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels, and includes a small amount of Petite Sirah for added depth and structure.

This is an easy match for barbecued meats, grilled sausages, roast pork, hearty pasta dishes, or rich vegetarian fare like mushroom risotto. Serve at 15-16°C, and decanting for 20-30 minutes can help open up the wine’s ripe fruit and spice.
