Caymus Vineyards Mer Soleil Chardonnay Reserve 2023 is a richly styled California Chardonnay that brings together freshness, depth, and a distinctly luxurious texture. Grown in the cool-climate Santa Lucia Highlands near Monterey, it balances coastal elegance with ripe, sun-kissed fruit, resulting in a wine that feels both generous and refined. The name Mer Soleil, combining “sea” and “sun,” captures the vineyard’s defining character and its Burgundy-meets-California personality.

In the glass, this Chardonnay shows a brilliant golden color that hints at its richness. The nose opens with apricot, pineapple, lemon, and subtle vanilla, offering a layered and inviting aromatic profile. On the palate, white pear leads the way, followed by grilled pineapple, vanilla, and a lift of fresh citrus that keeps the wine lively and well balanced. The texture is broad and polished, with enough freshness to maintain energy through the finish. Enjoyable now for its expressive fruit and oak-spiced complexity, it should also hold well over the next few years.

Viininvalmistus
Mer Soleil is sourced from the Santa Lucia Highlands, a prized vineyard area close to the Pacific Coast where morning and evening fog cool the vines, while warm afternoon sunshine helps fully ripen the fruit. This dramatic diurnal shift allows the Chardonnay to develop both concentration and bright natural acidity. The vineyard’s coastal terroir is key to the wine’s depth, complexity, and sense of balance, though detailed vinification methods for this bottling are not provided.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with roasted chicken, lobster, crab, creamy pasta, seared scallops, or poultry dishes with a buttery sauce. It also works well with dishes that echo its ripe fruit and subtle vanilla notes, such as grilled seafood or risotto with mushrooms. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C, and decanting is not necessary.

Caymus Vineyards was founded in Napa Valley in 1972 by Chuck Wagner and his parents, Charlie and Lorna, building on a family history of farming in the region that stretches back to 1857. While Caymus is best known for its celebrated Cabernet Sauvignon, including the iconic Caymus Special Selection, the Wagner family has also earned acclaim for high-quality wines across several styles, including Chardonnay. Charlie and Chuck Wagner were both inducted into Wine Spectator’s Hall of Fame, underscoring the estate’s standing as one of California’s most respected wine families.
