Château Clos René 2021 is a quietly impressive Pomerol that delivers classic character without the fanfare. In a cooler, more traditional Bordeaux vintage, it shows admirable finesse, freshness, and structure, with the kind of understated elegance that has made Clos René a dependable insider’s choice for generations.

In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby color with attractive violet reflections. The nose is expressive yet refined, offering dark cherries, plums, and blackcurrants layered with violet, cedar, and a subtle hint of truffle. The palate is precise and vibrant, built around fresh acidity, silky tannins, and a mineral line that gives the wine length and energy. Rather than sheer power, it emphasizes balance and lift, with a graceful, almost Burgundian feel. Château Clos René 2021 is enjoyable now with a little air, but it also has the structure and concentration to age beautifully for 10–15 years, and potentially up to 15–20 years from harvest.

Château Clos René comes from the Pomerol appellation on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where clay and gravel soils help shape the region’s signature depth, texture, and aromatic complexity. The 2021 vintage was a cooler, more классически styled year in Bordeaux, favoring freshness and precision over ripeness and weight. The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, with 25% new oak, allowing the fruit and mineral character to remain at the forefront while adding polish and subtle spice.

This is a superb match for roasted lamb, duck breast, beef fillet, game birds, mushroom dishes, and truffle-based preparations. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended if drinking now, especially to open up the aromatics and soften the wine’s structure.
