Chateau Gruaud Larose 2018

Château Gruaud Larose 2018 is a classic Saint-Julien from one of Bordeaux’s most historic 2ème Cru Classé estates. Known for its remarkable ageing potential and collector appeal, this vintage combines depth, structure, and a distinctly refined sense of place. With vines rooted on some of the appellation’s most prized south-facing gravelly slopes, it represents the depth and longevity that have made Gruaud Larose an international benchmark.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, the wine shows a deep garnet-purple colour that hints at its concentration and power. The nose opens with bold aromas of black cherry, mulberry, plum preserve, and blackcurrant, lifted by notes of menthol, lilac, liquorice, clove, fallen leaves, and earth. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a dense core of ripe fruit, framed by firm, grainy tannins and a fresh line of acidity that keeps everything in balance. The finish is long, spicy, and muscular, with the kind of structure that suggests excellent ageing potential over many years, and likely decades in a strong cellar.

Viininvalmistus
Château Gruaud Larose lies in the southern part of Saint-Julien, on the top of the plateau where south-facing parcels benefit from ideal exposure and drainage. The estate’s old vines, averaging over 46 years of age and including some more than 80 years old, contribute depth and complexity to the final blend. Since 2019, the château has been transitioning toward organic farming and also uses biodynamic practices, including plant-based herbal teas and trace mineral applications to support vine health; the 2018 vintage was crafted before that conversion but reflects the same careful vineyard philosophy.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a wine that calls for richly flavoured dishes such as roast lamb, beef fillet, game birds, duck breast, or slow-braised short ribs. It also works beautifully with truffle dishes, wild mushrooms, and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if opening young to allow the wine to fully unfurl.

Château Gruaud Larose was completed in 1725 and has long stood as one of Saint-Julien’s most respected estates. Over the centuries, the château has passed through four main family lineages before coming under the ownership of Jacques Merlaut and the Taillan Group in 1997, a group that also owns several notable Bordeaux properties. Gruaud Larose is particularly admired for its consistency, longevity, and historic reputation as one of the Left Bank’s great names.
