Château Léoville Las Cases 1989 is a benchmark Saint-Julien from one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates, often regarded as performing like a First Growth in all but name. The 1989 vintage combines impressive concentration and velvety richness with the estate’s hallmark structure, precision, and remarkable ageing potential. Produced from vineyards bordering Pauillac and Château Latour, it reflects both the power of the site and the pedigree of a historic Second Growth.

In the glass, the wine is a deep opaque ruby-purple, showing the intensity expected from a great mature Bordeaux. The nose is reserved at first, then unfolds with black and red fruits, subtle vanilla tones, and layered tertiary complexity that will continue to develop with time in bottle. On the palate, it is rich, opulent, and mouthfilling, with a medium to full body and beautifully balanced structure. The fruit remains dense and focused, wrapped in a polished, velvety texture that has the class and staying power for long ageing. While approachable in the broad sense of a mature vintage, this is a wine that may still reward patience as it continues to open and blossom.

Léoville Las Cases is located in the northernmost part of Saint-Julien, with prized parcels in the l’Enclos close to the Pauillac border and adjacent to Château Latour. The estate’s old vines and gravelly Médoc terroir contribute to its depth, structure, and famously long-lived style. In 1989, harvesting was carefully timed, with Merlot picked in early September and Cabernet later in the month, and a significant portion of the crop selected for the second wine, Clos du Marquis, reflecting the strict selection behind the grand vin.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is an ideal partner for refined, richly flavoured dishes such as roasted lamb, beef Wellington, game birds, or braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes and mature hard cheeses. Best served at 16–18°C, and decanting is recommended to help the wine express its layered aromatics and soften its firm, age-worthy structure.

Today, the estate is part of the Delon family holdings, alongside Château Nénin and Château Potensac, and is currently managed by Jean-Hubert Delon and Geneviève d’Alton. Widely admired for producing wines of outstanding consistency and longevity, it remains one of the most respected names in Bordeaux.
