Château Pichon-Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville 1990 is a standout Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most respected estates. Often described as a “super second,” it combines the power and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the generosity of Merlot, delivering a wine of remarkable depth, precision, and longevity. With its roots in an estate founded in 1689 and later split into two celebrated Pichon properties, this vintage carries both history and pedigree in the glass.

In the glass, the wine remains impressively deep and dark, with an inky purple core that hints at its concentration and enduring vitality. The bouquet is layered and expressive, opening with notes of crème de cassis, blackcurrant, blue fruit, incense, charcoal, and a subtle touch of licorice and tobacco. As it evolves, more savory and mineral nuances emerge, adding complexity and lift. On the palate, it is structured yet beautifully balanced, with firm but polished tannins, vibrant fruit, and a long, persistent finish. The 1990 vintage shows both richness and restraint, offering plenty of power without losing finesse. It is drinking well now, but its slow evolution means it still has the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

Pichon Baron is located in Pauillac, where gravel-rich soils and a prime Médoc terroir provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon to thrive. The estate works with meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard, adapting to each growing season and harvesting entirely by hand to ensure the grapes arrive in optimal condition. Strict parcel-by-parcel selection is carried out according to grape variety, vine age, and plot, with only the best fruit used for the grand vin. In the cellar, fermentation and maceration are carefully managed to extract color, tannin, and aromatic depth, followed by malolactic fermentation and aging in barrel in the cellar’s dim light. The final blend is created from a wide range of individual wines after rigorous tasting, allowing each vintage to express its own character while maintaining the estate’s signature style.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a classic wine for rich, flavorful dishes such as grilled ribeye, roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, or duck with earthy sauces. It also pairs beautifully with hard aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours if opened now, especially if the bottle has been resting for some time.

Château Pichon Longueville Baron traces its origins back to 1689, when the original Pichon estate was established in Bordeaux. After Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville divided the property among his children in the mid-19th century, the Baron and Comtesse branches emerged, both later classified as 2nd Growths in the 1855 Classification. The estate experienced a major revival in the 1980s under AXA and the leadership of Jean-Michel Cazes, who oversaw major investment in the vineyard and cellar and helped restore Pichon Baron to elite status in Pauillac. Today, it is widely regarded as one of the Médoc’s finest estates.
