Château Troplong Mondot 1990

Château Troplong Mondot 1990 is a standout Saint-Émilion from one of the Right Bank’s most prestigious estates. Deep, rich, and beautifully layered, it captures the power and generosity of a great Merlot-led Bordeaux, while also reflecting the estate’s remarkable rise to the top tier of the region.

In the glass, the wine shows a deep inky garnet tone with hints of purple, still impressive for its age. The bouquet is intense and evolved, offering notes of blackberries, coffee, licorice, camphor, and espresso, all wrapped in a plush, inviting aromatic profile. On the palate, it is full-bodied and lush, with lavish fruit, high glycerin, and a remarkably pure core of flavour. The acidity is low and the texture is supple, yet there is still enough structure for the wine to continue developing gracefully. Robert Parker noted that the 1990 was still several years from full maturity and should have the ability to last for decades, underlining its exceptional longevity.

Viininvalmistus
Château Troplong Mondot lies on the limestone plateau and slopes of Saint-Émilion, where the estate’s elevated position and varied soils help shape a wine of depth and finesse. The vineyard is planted mainly to Merlot, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The estate has embraced a more environmentally conscious approach in recent years, including organic farming on selected parcels, horse ploughing, optical sorting, and micro-fermentation in 600-litre barrels to increase precision in blending.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a wine that pairs beautifully with rich, flavourful dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck confit, truffle-infused dishes, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C to allow its aromatic complexity and texture to show at their best. Decanting is recommended, especially for a mature vintage like 1990, to help the wine open and reveal its full bouquet.

Château Troplong Mondot has roots dating back to 1745 and is one of the largest estates in Saint-Émilion, with around 43 hectares of vineyard. After changing hands several times, it came into the Valette family’s ownership in 1936, and from 1980 Christine Valette and Xavier Pariente transformed it into one of Bordeaux’s great success stories through ambitious investment and a clear vision. Their efforts were rewarded in 2006 when the estate was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé B, a status it retained in the 2012 revision, and the property also gained further distinction through the Michelin-starred restaurant at Les Belles Perdrix.
