Clos Saint-Jean Combe des Fous Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2010 in double magnum format is an impressive expression of one of the Rhône Valley’s most celebrated wines. Sourced from the stony, sun-baked terraces around La Crau, it brings together old-vine Grenache with supporting grapes that add depth, structure, and aromatic complexity. The 2010 vintage is especially notable for its balance of power and finesse, offering a fully developed, iconic Châteauneuf-du-Pape in a format made for memorable occasions.

In the glass, the wine shows a deep, concentrated core of dark fruit with a mature, polished character. Aromas of black berries, liquorice, dried herbs, and a distinct mineral nuance rise from the glass, giving it both richness and a sense of freshness.
On the palate, it is broad and warm with layered flavours of ripe dark fruit, spice, and garrigue, framed by firm but now nicely rounded tannins. The finish is long and persistent, with the 2010 vintage showing excellent harmony between intensity and elegance. This wine is at a beautiful drinking stage now, though the double magnum format also gives it further ageing potential.
Viininvalmistus
Clos Saint-Jean draws its fruit from parcels in the La Crau sector of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the soils are famously stony and the terraces hold heat well, helping grapes achieve full ripeness. The vineyards are planted largely to old-vine Grenache, with Syrah, Cinsault, and Vaccarèse contributing additional complexity, and yields are kept very low through careful vineyard work and gentle grape selection. Grenache is typically vinified in concrete to preserve pure fruit expression, while the other varieties are handled to build structure, and ageing is carried out in a mix of stainless steel and large barrels to maintain the wine’s natural intensity without heavy oak influence.

This is a wine that shines alongside rich, flavourful dishes such as slow-roasted lamb, game, beef stew, duck confit, or herb-crusted meats, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve it at around 16–18°C for the best expression of its aromatic depth and balance. Decanting is recommended, especially if opening earlier in its life, though the 2010 vintage in double magnum can also be enjoyed with a shorter decant to let the wine open gradually in the glass.
