Clos Saint-Jean Deus Ex Machina Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2007

Clos Saint-Jean Deus Ex Machina Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2007 is a powerful yet finely textured expression of one of the Rhône Valley’s most celebrated vineyards. Sourced from the oldest parcels in La Crau, it combines the depth of very old Grenache with a smaller share of Mourvèdre, creating a wine of remarkable concentration, balance, and sense of place. The 2007 vintage, already legendary for its warmth and generosity, gives this cuvée especially rich, ripe fruit and a beautifully supple finish.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, the wine shows a deep garnet color with mature ruby tones at the rim. The bouquet is lush and inviting, opening with black cherry, plum, liquorice, and garrigue spice, layered with warm earthy notes and a touch of savoury depth from the Mourvèdre. On the palate, it is full-bodied, generous, and silkily textured, with sweet dark fruit at the core and rounded tannins that give the wine its polished shape. The finish is long, warm, and spiced, with a lingering impression of sun-ripened fruit and Provençal herbs. This is a wine that is at or near its peak now, though well-stored bottles may continue to hold gracefully for a few more years.

Viininvalmistus
Deus Ex Machina comes from the oldest parcels on La Crau, one of the most revered terroirs in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the warm, stony soils favour ripe, concentrated Grenache. The Mourvèdre component is drawn from deeper, cooler pockets of sand and clay, adding structure and complexity. The fruit is rigorously selected, fermented in concrete, and then aged partly in large foudres and partly in barriques for the Mourvèdre, a careful élevage that preserves the wine’s intensity while adding depth and balance.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This wine pairs beautifully with rich, flavourful dishes such as slow-roasted lamb, beef short ribs, game, or duck with herbs and olives. It also works well with Provençal cuisine, truffle dishes, and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for about an hour if you are opening it now, especially if the bottle has been resting for some time.
