Domaine la Soumade Côtes du Rhône 2023

Domaine la Soumade Côtes du Rhône 2023 is a remarkably good-value red that hints at the character and generosity of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Made primarily from Grenache with a touch of Syrah, it offers impressive depth and charm from relatively young vines, all shaped by the hands of winemaker Frédéric Roméro. The result is a classic Rhône red with real personality, rooted in the region’s tradition of expressive, sun-ripened wines.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, it shows a clear ruby-red colour that immediately signals freshness and vibrancy. The nose brings together red and dark fruit with notes of violets, liquorice, smoke and a subtle hint of tar, giving the wine a distinctly Rhône-like complexity. On the palate, cranberry, strawberry and blackberry take the lead, supported by white pepper, clove and a touch of vanilla. It is open and approachable now, but has the structure and balance to stay at its best for another 4–5 years.

Viininvalmistus
The vineyards are planted on limestone- and clay-rich soils, a terroir that helps give the wine both freshness and texture. The grapes come from younger vines, up to around 10 years old, and the wine is made in a traditional style in open vats before spending 18 months in stainless steel tanks. It is then lightly filtered before bottling, preserving its fruit character and natural expression.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is an easy match for grilled meats, roast chicken, lamb, charcuterie and hearty Mediterranean dishes such as ratatouille or herbed vegetable bakes. Serve it slightly cool, ideally around 16–18°C, and consider a short decant if drinking young to help the aromas open up.
