Dominus 2018

Dominus 2018 is a superbly poised Napa Valley red that showcases the estate’s signature blend of power, precision, and longevity. Built on Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, it combines deep fruit concentration with remarkable freshness, structure, and mineral drive. Like the great wines that have made Dominus a benchmark for California, this vintage is already impressive — but it promises even greater complexity with time in bottle.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, the 2018 Dominus shows a very deep garnet-purple colour. The nose is intensely layered, opening with blackcurrant cordial, ripe black plums, boysenberries, and notes of Black Forest cake, followed by violet, star anise, cracked black pepper, raspberry leaf, pencil lead, and a subtle touch of garrigue. The palate is medium to full-bodied, richly textured, and tightly composed, with vivid black fruit framed by fresh acidity and fine, plush tannins. There is impressive tension and energy beneath the wine’s depth, leading into a long finish marked by fragrant earth and mineral detail. While already compelling, this is a wine with serious aging potential; it should benefit from several years in the cellar and can develop beautifully over the next few decades.

Viininvalmistus
The grapes for Dominus come from carefully selected parcels in the Napa Valley, a region whose warm days, cool nights, and well-drained soils are especially well suited to Bordeaux varieties. The fruit is hand-harvested, with rigorous sorting both in the vineyard and in the cellar after destemming to ensure only the best berries are used. Vinification follows a classic, meticulous approach, with around 18 days of skin contact during fermentation and maturation for 18 months in new French oak before clarification with fresh egg whites and bottling.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a wine that deserves equally thoughtful food pairings, such as grilled ribeye, roast lamb, venison, beef short ribs, or rich dishes with mushrooms and truffle. It also works beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 2 hours if drinking young; with additional bottle age, decanting can be shorter or omitted depending on the wine’s evolution.

Today, Dominus is considered a reference point for elegant, site-driven Cabernet-based blends from California.
