Dominus Napanook 2014 is a refined Napa Valley red that brings Bordeaux-inspired precision to California's warm terroir. Crafted as the more approachable second wine of Dominus, it offers impressive depth and structure, with a clear sense of place and a style built for early enjoyment without sacrificing elegance. First introduced in 1996 by Christian Moueix, Napanook reflects a long-standing commitment to vineyard-first winemaking and classic proportions.
Makuprofiili
In the glass, Napanook 2014 shows a deep, dark ruby colour. The nose is lifted and expressive, with boysenberry, wild herbs, thyme, and a subtle tobacco note that adds complexity.
The palate is sleek and finely drawn, balancing ripe dark fruit with a savoury, spicy edge. The tannins are firm but polished, giving the wine a graceful, linear feel and an elegant finish. While approachable now, it has the structure to evolve nicely over the coming years, gaining further nuance and harmony with time.
Viininvalmistus
The 2014 vintage in Napa was shaped by a very dry early winter, followed by heavy rain in February and continued precipitation through March and April. Warmer-than-average temperatures defined the season, though only moderate heat spikes were recorded in June and July, with no major heatwaves in August or September. Christian Moueix applies a distinctly vineyard-driven approach at Napanook, combining Bordeaux-inspired discipline with careful adaptations to the estate’s warmer, drier microclimate. Grapes are meticulously harvested, washed to remove dust, destemmed, then sorted twice—first by optical sorting and then by hand. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, and after just a few days the skins and seeds are removed to preserve freshness and avoid over-extraction. The wine then matures for 18 months in French oak barrels, 20% of which are new, before being fined with egg whites and bottled without further treatment.
Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a versatile wine for dishes with depth and savoury character, such as grilled ribeye, roast lamb, braised short ribs, game birds, or mushroom-based dishes. It also pairs well with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if drinking young to open up the aromatics and soften the tannins.

Napanook became the estate’s second wine when it was first produced in 1996, offering a slightly earlier-drinking expression of the same exceptional vineyard fruit. The estate has earned a strong reputation for combining Old World structure with Napa Valley richness, and remains a benchmark for elegant, terroir-focused wines in California.
