Gutzler Westhofener Spätburgunder Trocken 2019 is a finely tuned German Pinot Noir that shows just how expressive Rheinhessen can be in the right hands. Made from fruit sourced from Gutzler’s two top vineyards and matured with patience in large oak casks, it offers remarkable character, freshness, and depth for a village-level wine, while still showing the elegance and precision associated with top Spätburgunder.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, this Spätburgunder shows a polished, vibrant profile with a graceful depth rather than overt power. The nose is lifted and inviting, with ripe wild raspberries, cherry stone, fruit cake, subtle herbs, and a faint earthy note that adds complexity. On the palate, red berry fruit takes the lead again, especially raspberry and cherry, supported by a clean mineral thread that reflects Westhofen’s limestone soils and the influence of large oak aging. The texture is supple and well-shaped, with freshness keeping everything in balance. It already drinks beautifully, but will reward a few more years in bottle as the fruit integrates further and the savory notes become more pronounced.

Viininvalmistus
The grapes come from Gutzler’s two best sites in Westhofen, in Rheinhessen, where limestone-rich soils help shape the wine’s mineral tension and finesse. Fruit was rigorously hand-sorted, meaning only the best grapes were kept for this cuvée, even though they were not selected for the estate’s single-vineyard wines. The wine is then matured for an extended period in large oak casks, which preserves the wine’s freshness while adding gentle structure and complexity rather than heavy oak flavor.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is an excellent partner for roasted duck, game birds, mushroom risotto, veal, or pork dishes with earthy herbs and light cream sauces. It also works well with grilled salmon or poultry served with berry or cherry-based reductions. Serve at 14–16°C, and decanting is not essential, though a short airing can help the wine open up if consumed young.
