Henri Bonneau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Célestins 1998 is one of the great expressions of old-school Rhône winemaking: rare, deeply characterful, and built from exceptionally low-yielding Grenache. Sourced from a tiny 6-hectare estate and released only when deemed ready, it carries the unmistakable stamp of one of the region’s true legends. This is a wine with real historical stature, made in a style that has captivated collectors and critics alike for decades.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby core that still hints at remarkable youth for its age. The nose is intensely layered, offering kirsch, blackcurrant, roasted herbs, beef blood, and a mineral edge reminiscent of crushed stone. On the palate, it is full-bodied and richly textured, with concentrated Grenache fruit wrapped around a powerful, structured mid-palate. Despite its depth and intensity, the wine remains lifted and complex, finishing long and persistent. It has already shown superb maturity, yet wines of this stature have the density and balance to evolve beautifully for many more years under proper cellaring.

Viininvalmistus
The vineyards are located in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where warm conditions and stony soils help Grenache ripen fully and develop exceptional concentration. Henri Bonneau consistently harvested very late, often among the last in the appellation, to ensure perfect phenolic ripeness. Fermentation was completed in cement tanks before the wine was transferred to very old Burgundy casks, where it aged for many years until Bonneau decided it was ready for bottling.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a wine best enjoyed with richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb, braised beef, game, duck confit, or slow-cooked stews with herbs. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for an hour or more if the bottle is still youthful, though very old bottles should be decanted carefully, if at all, to preserve their delicate evolution.

Henri Bonneau (1938–2016) was a 12th-generation winemaker and one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most revered figures. He began producing wine in 1956 and became legendary for his uncompromising approach, tiny production, and profoundly age-worthy wines. Today, his son Marcel continues the family legacy, while Bonneau’s wines remain among the most sought-after and admired in the Rhône.
