Kongsgaard The Judge Chardonnay 2017

Kongsgaard The Judge Chardonnay 2017 is one of California’s most celebrated white wines, a benchmark Chardonnay that consistently draws top scores from major critics. Crafted by John Kongsgaard from fruit grown on the family’s exceptionally rocky ranch east of Napa, it combines richness, precision, and remarkable depth in a style that has become iconic in American Chardonnay.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, this Chardonnay shows a polished, luminous character with layers that seem to unfold endlessly. The nose is intensely aromatic, offering citrus, peach, and apricot, followed by tropical notes of pineapple and mango, lifted by a subtle vanilla edge from new French oak. On the palate, it is expansive yet beautifully balanced, with flavors of green apple, white pear, citrus, melon, popcorn, toasted bread, butter, and crushed stone. The wine’s mineral backbone adds tension and clarity to its richness, while the finish is long, complex, and persistent. It is already superb now, but will continue to develop gracefully over the next few years.

Viininvalmistus
The Judge comes from an extremely stony vineyard on the Kongsgaard family ranch east of Napa, a site John Kongsgaard planted himself in the 1970s. The vineyard’s rocky soils and Napa Valley climate help create a Chardonnay with both power and finesse. Production is entirely hands-on and highly limited, with the wine aged for 22 months in brand-new French oak barrels to build texture, complexity, and depth.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a Chardonnay that pairs wonderfully with luxurious seafood dishes such as lobster, scallops, or roasted turbot, as well as rich poultry, truffle risotto, or creamy sauces. Serve it slightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and consider brief decanting if you want to open up its aromatic complexity and layered texture.
