Kongsgaard The Judge Chardonnay 2021

Kongsgaard The Judge Chardonnay 2021 is one of California’s great benchmark Chardonnays, admired year after year by top critics for its rare combination of power, finesse, balance, and depth. Sourced from a remarkably rocky vineyard on the Kongsgaard family ranch east of Napa, this is an intensely crafted wine with a strong sense of place and a beautiful nod to the winery’s history: the vineyard was planted by John Kongsgaard himself in the 1970s and named The Judge in honor of his father, a longtime Napa Valley judge.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, The Judge shows a rich, luminous golden tone that hints at its concentration and oak maturation. The bouquet is layered and expressive, unfolding with citrus, peach, and apricot before moving into pineapple, mango, and vanilla, all wrapped in a polished, luxurious frame. The palate is equally impressive, with flavors of crisp apple, white pear, citrus, melon, popcorn, toasted bread, butter, and crushed stone. That mineral backbone gives the wine freshness and precision, balancing its generosity beautifully. The finish is long, complex, and memorable, and while it is already superb now, it has the structure and depth to evolve gracefully over the next few years.

Viininvalmistus
The Judge comes from an extremely stony site on the Kongsgaard family ranch east of Napa, where the poor, rocky soils help naturally limit yields and build concentration. John Kongsgaard planted the vineyard himself in the 1970s, and production remains tiny, with every stage handled by hand. The wine is aged for 22 months in brand-new French oak barrels, which adds layers of vanilla, toast, and texture without overwhelming the vineyard’s distinctive mineral character.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This Chardonnay is a superb match for rich seafood dishes such as lobster, crab, or butter-poached scallops, as well as roast chicken, creamy pasta, and truffle-infused dishes. Serve it slightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, to let its aromas and texture fully open. Decanting is not essential, but a short aeration can help reveal its many layers if enjoyed young.
