Marcassin Vineyard Pinot Noir 2012 is a highly sought-after California Pinot Noir from one of the most revered names in the region. Crafted by Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer, it is known for its remarkable depth, Burgundy-like complexity, and exceptional aging potential, with critics often comparing it to grand cru wines from the Côte de Nuits.

In the glass, this Pinot Noir shows a dense ruby-plum color that hints at its richness and concentration. The nose is layered and seductive, with aromas of ripe strawberries, black cherry liqueur, fresh porcini mushrooms, and forest floor, giving it both fruit purity and savory depth. The palate is full-bodied, dark, and intensely expressive, with a supple texture and a dramatic, almost flamboyant style. Concentrated yet polished, it finishes with impressive length and complexity. While already compelling, the 2012 vintage has the structure and pedigree to age beautifully for 12 to 15 years, and likely longer with careful cellaring.

This wine comes from Marcassin Vineyard in Sonoma County, north of Santa Rosa, in one of California’s most acclaimed cool-climate Pinot Noir sites. The wine is made primarily from the Calera clone, with possible additional mystery clones, reflecting the meticulous and selective approach associated with the estate. Attention to detail in both vineyard and cellar is central to Marcassin’s style, resulting in wines of precision, depth, and longevity.

Serve this Pinot Noir with dishes that can match its richness and aromatic complexity, such as roasted duck, wild mushroom risotto, braised short ribs, or game birds like quail and pheasant. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-based dishes and aged, earthy cheeses. Best served at around 15–17°C, and decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended if the wine is being enjoyed young, though older bottles should be handled more gently.
