Masseto 2021

Masseto 2021 is a remarkable return to the estate’s original expression: pure Merlot from the famed blue clay slope of Masseto Hill in Bolgheri, Tuscany. This vintage stands out for its combination of generous ripeness and exceptional precision, offering a more refined and vertical style while preserving the depth and power that have made Masseto one of Italy’s most sought-after wines.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, Masseto 2021 shows a deep, dense, vibrant ruby color. The nose is layered and seductive, with dark cherry, ripe plum, prune, and blackberry lifted by floral notes of violet and lavender, followed by hints of dark chocolate, warm spice, graphite, cedar, and a subtle touch of blood orange. The palate is rich, intense, and beautifully silky, yet driven by a linear energy that brings focus and tension. Ultra-fine tannins give the wine a seamless, almost weightless structure despite its concentration, while layers of dark fruit, cocoa, sweet tobacco, herbs, and mineral nuance carry into a long, elegant finish. This is a wine with outstanding aging potential and should evolve gracefully over decades.

Viininvalmistus
Masseto is grown on the estate’s celebrated blue clay hillside in Bolgheri, where the soil’s mix of clay and limestone helps retain water and support slow, balanced ripening. The 2021 season benefited from a mild, rainy winter that built strong reserves in the soil, followed by a calm spring and a warm, dry summer that produced small, highly concentrated grapes without vineyard stress. Harvesting was done parcel by parcel, with each small section handled separately to preserve terroir expression. After careful sorting, the Merlot was fermented in concrete tanks with spontaneous fermentation and gentle, slow extraction before maturing for 24 months in new French barriques and an additional year in bottle.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
Masseto 2021 pairs beautifully with premium dishes such as grilled or roasted beef, lamb loin, venison, truffle risotto, and rich mushroom-based preparations. It also works well with mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C and decant for 1 to 2 hours if drinking young, though a longer cellaring period will reveal even greater complexity.
