Ojai Vineyard’s Syrah Bien Nacido 2013 is a striking example of cool-climate California Syrah, combining power with the kind of restraint and finesse more often associated with the Rhône. Sourced from the celebrated Bien Nacido Vineyard, it stands out for its balance, precision, and layered complexity, reflecting both the pedigree of the site and Ojai’s long-standing commitment to expressive, terroir-driven winemaking. The wine has earned notable critical acclaim, including 95 points from Vinous, confirming its place among the more compelling Syrahs of the vintage.

In the glass, this Syrah shows a deep, vibrant color with dark purplish tones. The nose is lifted and perfumed, unfolding with blackcurrant, blueberry, violet, lavender, and a touch of peppery, savory meatiness that gives the wine real character. The palate is rich yet seamless, with ripe blue and black fruit framed by saline notes, fine tannins, and a vivid sense of freshness. Earthy undertones and cool-climate spice add depth to the finish, which feels layered and energetic rather than heavy. While already highly expressive, the wine has the structure and balance to age gracefully for several more years, developing even more savory and floral complexity over time.

Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Barbara County is one of California’s most respected cool-climate sites, known for producing Syrah with intensity, freshness, and mineral tension. Ojai Vineyard has long favored cooler vineyard sources to preserve balance and highlight site expression, and the 2013 vintage reflects that approach clearly. Harvest is typically carried out early to maintain vibrancy and avoid overripe fruit, and the winery is known for a careful, low-intervention style with limited use of sulfites, little to no filtration, and restrained oak to let the vineyard character shine through.

This Syrah is an excellent match for grilled lamb, braised short ribs, roast duck, venison, or mushroom-based dishes with earthy depth. It also pairs beautifully with hard aged cheeses and charred vegetables. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if opening young, as that will help the wine open up and show its full aromatic complexity.
