Ojai Vineyard Syrah Grenache Sebastiano No Sulfites 2014 is a beautifully expressive Californian red with a distinctly European sense of balance and finesse. Crafted from an equal blend of Syrah and Grenache and produced in a tiny run of just 264 cases, it stands out for its purity, silken texture, and vibrant, peppery fruit character. Built without added sulfites, this is a wine that shows both precision and personality in equal measure.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, it shows a deep, dark red color with youthful purple hues. The nose is highly aromatic and captivating, with crushed raspberries, black pepper, tobacco, sage, menthol, and subtle licorice coming through in layers. On the palate, the wine is concentrated yet elegant, with dark and red berry fruit wrapped around a peppery, lively acidity and a remarkably supple, silky texture. The wine is dense and complex, with impressive depth and a long finish that suggests plenty of current appeal. Because it is made with no added SO2, its long-term aging potential is harder to predict, but it is already highly expressive and should continue to evolve well in the near to medium term.

Viininvalmistus
The fruit comes from the John Sebastiano Vineyard in California, a cool-climate site selected by Adam Tolmach for its ability to deliver balance, freshness, and clear terroir expression. Tolmach is known for harvesting early to preserve brightness and avoid overripe fruit, especially in Santa Barbara County’s favorable conditions where rain, frost, and rot are less of a concern. The wine is crafted with a minimalist approach, reflecting Ojai Vineyard’s ongoing focus on purity, low intervention, reduced sulfur use, and unfiltered bottling.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, grilled duck, herb-crusted pork, mushroom dishes, and Mediterranean fare featuring rosemary, thyme, or olives. Serve slightly cool, around 16-18°C, to keep the fruit and spice in balance. Decanting for 30-60 minutes is recommended, especially if opened young, to allow the wine’s aromatic complexity and texture to fully unfold.

Ojai Vineyard was founded by Adam Tolmach, a UC Davis graduate who first worked in Santa Barbara County before helping establish Au Bon Climat with Jim Clendenen. After parting ways, Tolmach returned to his family property in Ojai and began producing his own wines in the early 1980s, building one of California’s most respected small-production wineries. Ojai Vineyard has become a benchmark for cool-climate Californian wines, known for its thoughtful farming, restrained use of oak, and commitment to organic and low-intervention winemaking.
