Ovid Red Experiment N2.7 2017

Ovid Red Experiment N2.7 2017 is a compelling Napa Valley blend built around Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc adding lift and complexity. Born from Ovid’s experimental approach on Pritchard Hill, this small-production wine explores how neighboring vineyard parcels express themselves under the same meticulous farming and cellar work. It is a striking example of why Ovid has become one of the most fascinating names in California wine.

Makuprofiili
Deep ruby in the glass, this wine offers an immediate sense of richness and concentration. The nose is layered with blackcurrant, blackberry, cocoa, cola, liquorice, cedar, and pencil lead, delivering both dark fruit depth and classic Cabernet character. On the palate, it is full-bodied, intense, and plush, with fruit leading the way but never feeling heavy thanks to its fine acidity and structural balance. The finish is long and confident, suggesting excellent aging potential over many years, where the wine should gain further nuance and polish.

Viininvalmistus
The fruit comes from vineyard sites bordering Ovid’s own holdings on Pritchard Hill in Napa Valley, where subtle differences in soil were the focus of this experiment. The grapes were harvested in the same manner and at the same time as Ovid’s estate fruit to allow for a true comparison, then aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, half of them new, to build depth, texture, and aromatic complexity.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a natural partner for grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, roasted lamb, or rich dishes with earthy components such as mushrooms and truffle. Serve at around 16–18°C for the best expression of its fruit and structure. Decanting for at least 1–2 hours is recommended, especially if enjoyed young, to allow the wine to open fully.

Ovid was founded in 2000 by Mark Nelson and Dana Johnson and is located high on Pritchard Hill in Napa Valley, near some of the region’s most highly regarded estates. The winery is known for its tiny production, organic-minded farming, solar-powered operation, and a fearless commitment to experimentation. Since 2010, winemaker Austin Peterson has led the cellar with a creative vision shaped by global experience and a deep understanding of Napa Valley terroir.
