Paul Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle 2003

Paul Jaboulet Aîné’s La Chapelle has long been one of Hermitage’s most iconic expressions, and the 2003 vintage shows why this wine is considered among the world’s great Syrahs. Shaped by a notably hot year in the Rhône, it delivers a powerful, concentrated style that combines the hill’s classic grandeur with the intensity of the vintage.

In the glass, the 2003 La Chapelle is dark, dense, and deeply coloured. The nose is richly layered with ripe blackberries, blackcurrants, prunes, dark chocolate, spice, tobacco, and subtle toasted oak. The palate is full-bodied and powerful, with impressive depth, firm tannins, and a long, warming finish. The wine already shows remarkable concentration, but it also has the structure to evolve further in bottle, gaining additional complexity over time.

Viininvalmistus
The grapes were harvested from some of Hermitage’s most historic parcels, including Les Bessards and Le Méal, where the steep hillside terroir lends the wine its hallmark structure and mineral backbone. The extreme summer heat of 2003 produced small berries with thick skins, resulting in exceptional concentration and richness. Vinification followed the estate’s traditional methods, with fermentation in stainless steel tanks and ageing in oak barrels to build texture, depth, and ageing potential.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a wine that calls for equally bold dishes such as slow-braised beef, game, venison, lamb shank, or rich mushroom-based plates. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours, ideally longer if opened young, to allow the wine’s aromatic complexity and structure to fully emerge.
