Petrolo Galatrona 2020

Petrolo Galatrona 2020 is one of Tuscany’s true benchmark Merlots, a wine often placed in the same conversation as the great Pomerol estates and regularly praised by leading critics for its depth and finesse. First made in 1994 and now considered an Italian icon, it combines remarkable richness with elegance, making it both a collector’s wine and a standout bottle for special occasions.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, Galatrona shows a deep, dark ruby-red color that hints at its concentration. The bouquet opens with ripe red berries, cherry, vanilla, toasted almond, dried mint, and a subtle touch of licorice, gradually becoming more expressive as it breathes. On the palate, the 2020 vintage delivers impressive richness and texture, with polished, fully ripe tannins and a long, refined finish. Despite its power, the wine remains balanced and poised, with layers of dark fruit, sweet oak spice, and a fresh, elegant lift that suggests excellent aging potential over the next 10–15 years, and likely longer in a well-kept cellar.

Viininvalmistus
Galatrona comes from Petrolo’s estate in a cool, forested area of Tuscany located almost exactly between Florence, Arezzo, and Siena, where the surrounding landscape helps preserve freshness in the fruit. Petrolo follows natural principles in the vineyard, avoiding both organic and inorganic fertilisers and encouraging biodiversity through practices such as allowing grass to grow freely between the rows. The result is an expressive organic Merlot shaped by careful, low-intervention viticulture and precise winemaking that focuses on purity, structure, and balance.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a wine that deserves rich, flavourful dishes such as grilled ribeye, lamb rack, slow-braised beef, truffle risotto, or mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if the wine is young, as this will help unlock its aromatic complexity and soften the tannins.

Petrolo has built cult status since the mid-1990s and is now regarded as one of Tuscany’s elite producers, earning repeated high scores from critics such as James Suckling and Robert Parker. When Luca Sanjust took over the estate, he recognized its greater potential beyond ordinary Chianti production and helped transform it into a benchmark name in the region, best known for Galatrona and the Sangiovese-based Torrine.
