Petrolo Galatrona 2020 Magnum

Petrolo Galatrona 2020 Magnum is one of Tuscany’s most celebrated Merlot-based wines, often praised in the same breath as the great wines of Pomerol. Frequently described as “the Pétrus of Tuscany,” it combines remarkable depth, purity and concentration with a level of finesse that has made it an Italian cult classic and a serious collector’s bottle.

In the glass, Galatrona shows a deep, dark ruby-red color that hints at its intensity. The nose is layered and elegant, with aromas of ripe cherry, red berries, vanilla, toasted almond, licorice and a subtle touch of dried mint, unfolding beautifully as the wine opens. The palate is rich and expansive, delivering extraordinary depth of fruit, velvety texture and fully ripe tannins wrapped in a long, polished finish. Despite its power, the wine retains balance and freshness, with a refined, almost cool-climate elegance that should allow it to age gracefully for many years.

Viininvalmistus
Galatrona comes from Petrolo’s organically farmed estate in a cool, forested part of Tuscany, positioned almost exactly between Florence, Arezzo and Siena. The estate follows natural vineyard practices, avoiding both organic and inorganic fertilizers and encouraging spontaneous grass growth to support soil health, moisture balance and biodiversity. The 2020 vintage reflects careful vineyard work and a vinification approach aimed at preserving the purity, structure and expressive character of Merlot.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
Serve Galatrona with rich dishes that can match its depth and texture, such as filet of beef, slow-braised lamb, game, truffle pasta or mature hard cheeses. It is best enjoyed at around 16–18°C. Decanting for at least 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the bouquet to fully develop and the wine to show its best balance.

Under Luca Sanjust’s direction, the estate moved from producing more traditional Chianti to becoming a benchmark for top Tuscan wine, with Galatrona standing as its flagship Merlot and Torrione as another signature wine. The estate has earned repeated acclaim from leading critics such as Robert Parker and James Suckling, cementing its reputation among Italy’s elite producers.
