Rhys Alpine Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018

Rhys Alpine Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018 is a beautifully precise, high-altitude Pinot Noir from one of the coolest and most demanding sites in Santa Cruz Mountains. Grown on a steep, limestone-rich vineyard shaped by Pacific fog and coastal chill, it captures the kind of elegance and energy that have made Rhys a benchmark for Californian terroir-driven wines.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, this Pinot Noir shows a polished, medium-depth colour with a lifted, delicate profile that hints at both freshness and concentration. The nose is strikingly layered, offering dark cherry, raspberry and strawberry, followed by cocoa, cola, floral notes, and subtle accents of cinnamon and cedar. On the palate, the wine is deep and pure, with dark fruit taking center stage before unfolding into a long, complex finish. Despite its intensity, it remains remarkably light on its feet, with only 12.6% alcohol and a refined, almost floating texture. The tannins are present and structured, suggesting excellent aging potential over many years as the wine gains even more nuance and softness.

Viininvalmistus
Alpine Vineyard is a rocky, exceptionally steep site in the Santa Cruz Mountains, with some parcels reaching a 40% incline and a strong limestone influence that contributes to the wine’s tension and mineral backbone. The vineyard benefits from Pacific fog and cool ocean air, which help preserve freshness and aromatic precision. In the cellar, winemaker Jeff Brinkman uses 25% whole clusters, with the remainder de-stemmed, before aging the wine for 18 months in a mix of new and used oak barrels.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This Pinot Noir is a natural match for roast duck, grilled salmon, mushroom dishes, game birds, and dishes with earthy or lightly spiced elements. Serve it slightly chilled, ideally around 14–16°C, to preserve its freshness and aromatic lift. Decanting is recommended for about 30–60 minutes if enjoyed young, though it can also be poured with minimal aeration to appreciate its elegance straight from the bottle.
